Orbit: 3D Game Design – Unity ML-Agents Made Easy
March 27, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
ML-Agents is a Unity package that enables artificial intelligence to be added to game characters and objects. However, learning ML-Agents can be a challenge. The developer needs to have some background in both deep learning and in the Unity game engine. Most existing books and tutorials either focus heavily on required mathematics before building anything practical or jump quickly and deeply into source code without enough perspective on the big picture.
This session will give a brief overview on required concepts, describe how ML-Agents is structured, and show some examples. The goal is for attendees to understand ML-Agents enough by the end of the session to learn and experiment further on their own if interested.
This video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpLc3oFwjQI) shows an example that will be presented during the session. The airplanes are controlled by a neural net. The controls for the airplanes were not programmed; they were learned. These AI airplanes can easily beat most human-controlled airplanes on the same racing course.
To follow this session, we recommend that attendees are 16+ in age and are familiar with Unity or another 3D game engine. This will not be a beginner’s tutorial on Unity. Those without the recommended background may struggle to understand the presentation.
NOTE: Due to the current circumstances, this is an online-only event. We are hosting it on our Discord server, which you can join using this link: discordapp.com/invite/mrTDyau

ABOUT ORBIT: 3D GAME DESIGN
Looking to expand your 3D game development skills? This group is for you!
The 3D Game Design Orbit group is intended to help local game makers connect, and to provide a forum for mutual support and peer-based mentorship. This group focuses on topics related to popular 3D game engines such as Unity, Unreal, Godot, and more.
The 3D Game Design Orbit group meets at 1pm every fourth Saturday of the month in the #general-voice channel of the Tech Valley Game Space Discord. These group meetups provide opportunities for participants to share information, discuss projects, ask questions, and obtain guidance from experienced mentors.
Orbit is a community-driven mentorship program designed to provide greater opportunities for learning and collaboration at Tech Valley Game Space than ever before!
The goal of Orbit is to bring current and aspiring game makers together based around mutual interests, and provide a consistent environment for sustained skill development, personal growth, and community building.
Orbit groups are run as informal, drop-in sessions. However, we do ask that you sign up in advance and read the age guidelines for each group before participating. To sign up, visit techvalleygamespace.com/orbit.
